Receiving an AIEF Scholarship helped Charlotte to develop and realise her passion for Science which she is now pursuing at university.

“I am a proud Barunggam woman from the remote town of Miles in the Western Downs Region of Queensland.

“My journey with AIEF began in 2019 as a Year 8 student, when I began boarding at The Cathedral School in Townsville on an AIEF Scholarship.

“Throughout my time at school, I made the most of the opportunities available, from debating and volunteering to netball and rugby, but especially in the world of Science and Maths.

“My fascination with Science began when I was eight years old, watching the news on television.  I saw a scientist in a white lab coat using a pipette in a chemistry lab and after that, I told my mum, “I want to be a scientist.”

“I am now in my second year studying a Bachelor of Advanced Science, majoring in Physics and Science Communications.

“In 2024, I was a panellist at the Aerospace Aviation Australia event, where I contributed to discussions on advocacy and education in the space industry, with a focus on engaging young people in STEM.

“I am also a member of the Australian Federal Government’s Youth Steering Committee and was selected as the Australian Youth Delegate for the Commonwealth Youth Council and represented Australia at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Samoa in October last year.

“I am deeply passionate about promoting STEM education and advocating for Indigenous, disabled and other underrepresented youth in STEM.

“After completing my studies, I am considering postgraduate studies to become a teacher and support other young people to consider careers in STEM.

“Getting the right support has been crucial to my academic journey.  I am the first person in my family to finish high school and study at university.

“AIEF has not only shaped me as a student but has helped shape me into the proud Indigenous woman I am today.”

We are proud to have played a role in supporting Charlotte in her journey from finishing school to where she is now at university following her dreams.
