St Vincent’s College, Potts Point offers AIEF Scholarships for boarding students.
St Vincent’s College continues to be very proud of the small role it can play in deepening respect for First Nations Australians, offering excellent educational opportunities at a well resourced College in a vibrant city location and building enduring friendships with students from diverse backgrounds living together in a Boarding Community.
During 2024, the number of Boarders in the AIEF program remained relatively stable. We were delighted to have accompanied two students Anna and Brooklyn throughout their secondary education, and the completion of their HSC Studies. I found Anna’s participation in the AIEF Graduation to be a particular highlight. To see her so confident and capable on the evening, and to see our graduate as part of the bigger cohort was very moving. The cumulative impact of the AIEF program over the whole of Australia is making a significant change to educational outcomes.
The capacity of our AIEF students to be cultural ambassadors has been very evident this year with students from all Year levels able to provide Acknowledgement of Country (often in language), and provide perspectives, personal family stories and experiences. These moments have enriched our school celebrations, liturgies, student leadership and national commemorations. Sorry Day stands out for its poignancy and impact as the students shared with the College Community their lament for lost culture, language and spirituality, but also their hopefulness for the future. The formal leadership role of Brooklyn as Co-Captain of Boarding was a strong and visible statement of merit based selection.
In August, Mary Aikenhead Ministries (our sponsoring canonical entity) hosted an oration by Senator Malarndirri McCarthy. Our AIEF students who attended that event were very impressive, engaging with guests, and asking intelligent questions. Many were clearly identifiable as the emerging leaders of their generation.
The AIEF scholarship students have enjoyed the support of our school-based co-ordinator, Mrs Jo Kenderes, who has encouraged them, liaised with AIEF and their mentors. Our senior students have enjoyed the career-focused activities and mentoring and all have enjoyed the cultural and social opportunities to meet their peers in other schools.
I would like to thank the AIEF team for their support throughout the year.
We are proud to be a partner school of AIEF.
Your investment will help more Indigenous students access world-class education and careers.
Going through boarding school taught me how to step out of my comfort zone and allowed me to become more confident in who I am.
