Seymour College, Adelaide offers AIEF Scholarships for boarding students.
At Seymour College, the unique perspectives and contributions of our Indigenous students, supported by our valued partnership with AIEF, are invaluable to our community. This year has been filled with inspiring achievements from our AIEF students, whose journeys are a source of pride and motivation for us all. I am pleased to share some of these highlights.
A significant milestone was reached with the graduation of our three Year 12 AIEF scholarship recipients, Jade, Lily, and Shonny. I was delighted to attend their special graduation ceremony in August at Taronga Zoo in Sydney, joined by Indigenous Programs Coordinator, Raquel Hogben. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to these young women and look forward to following their futures, and the impact they will make, in the years ahead.
Jade has been pivotal in delivering key events on the College’s calendar, including our National Sorry Day Service and National Reconciliation Week Assembly, while also celebrating Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture daily within our community. She led a group of students at the NRW breakfast at the Adelaide Convention Centre, which was a memorable experience for all involved. In her role as the 2024 Cultural Diversity Leader in the Boarding House, Jade has been integral to planning various initiatives, including organising the inaugural National Reconciliation Week Dinner in the Boarding House—a proud and meaningful celebration of her culture shared with her peers.
Earlier this year, Year 11 student Shakyra shared her inspiring journey and future aspirations on The Front podcast, expressing gratitude for the opportunities her AIEF scholarship has provided. Shakyra, was also selected, along with AIEF Year 12 student Lily, as a finalist in the ‘If I Were Prime Minister for a Day’ competition. This achievement took them both to Canberra, where they toured Parliament House, met dignitaries and members of parliament, observed Question Time, and attended a private breakfast with politicians.
Sharing our students’ stories allows us to broaden our understanding and appreciate diverse perspectives, fostering greater empathy and connection. These narratives are essential, as they remind us of the richness that each individual brings to our community and the importance of supporting one another’s journeys.
The presence and achievements of our Indigenous students foster a deeper understanding of First Nations perspectives within our community, enriching the lives of all our students. I am proud of Seymour’s continued connection with the AIEF, which empowers our Indigenous students to pursue their dreams and make meaningful contributions. We look forward to seeing many more inspiring stories from our AIEF students and graduates.
Your investment will help more Indigenous students access world-class education and careers.
To be honest, my Mum and I feel like we’ve won the lottery. I get to go to the best school, have all the activities and opportunities they provide and then receive all this support after I graduate – it’s amazing.
