On 10 June, a group of Year 12 AIEF-BHP Scholarship Students spent the day at the BHP Perth Training and Repair Centre for the annual AIEF-BHP Careers Experience Day.
After an Acknowledgement of Country, students learned what to expect from the day, aimed at providing information about different pathways to employment at BHP.
To kick things off, staff gave an overview of BHP, Western Australian Iron Ore and their supply chain. Students also learned about recruitment processes and the traineeships and apprenticeships on offer through BHP.
Students were then introduced to the BHP FutureFit Academy – a new approach to training with a pathway to a career in maintenance. This interested multiple students and they enjoyed a site tour of the workshop, where they had the opportunity to inspect the dummy cab used by trainees.
BHP staff shared their career experiences at BHP, including AIEF-BHP Tertiary Scholar Jack Wright (now employed at BHP), who gave a presentation about one of the two BHP Internships he has previously completed.
In the afternoon, students participated in a mock Engagement Centre where they learned about the kinds of behavioural-based questions they might be asked in a job interview, and how best to answer these.
The spaghetti tower construction activity that followed proved popular, with students working in teams to build towers topped with a marshmallow. At the end of the activity, BHP staff explained how they use these kinds of sessions to assess potential employment skills.
To top off a great day of learning and fun, students were given the chance to participate in a Q+A with BHP staff to answer any remaining questions about the kinds of opportunities on offer at BHP.
