On 7 August 2014 38 AIEF Year 12 students from QLD attended the AIEF Learn It! Live It! Work Readiness Workshop at the Mercure Hotel Brisbane. As a key component of the AIEF Pathways Program, the AIEF Learn It! Live It! Work Readiness Workshop assists students to gain the information and skills needed to successfully transition from school through to work or further study, and on to ongoing success in their chosen career. Students attended informative sessions on financial literacy, interview techniques and public speaking and career options, facilitated by AIEF major Corporate Partners, Ambassadors and other key supporters including the Commonwealth Bank Foundation, Stephanie Brantz, Accor and Leighton Contractors. AIEF was thrilled to welcome to the program David Williams and Riki Salam from Indigenous creative agency Gilimbaa as guest speakers, as well as several AIEF Alumni who shared their experiences of life after school. Students closed the day with the chance to connect over a fun game of ten-pin bowling.

Students took away a greater understanding of different career pathways and the opportunities available to them after school, as well as skills to help them navigate the pathway from tertiary study and the recruitment process to ongoing success in their chosen career. After the event students reported having a better understanding of job opportunities across different industries, saying they learned “how much is really out there”. The sessions gave one student “awareness of what challenges I might face after school”, and another left with “a better understanding of what to expect when I leave school, whether I go to the work force or uni”. Importantly, the AIEF Learn It! Live It! Work Readiness Workshop equipped students with “practical skills to take into an interview” and “skills to land my job”.
