AIEF held the Learn It! Live It! Work Readiness Workshop over two days in Brisbane for Year 11 and Year 12 students on 19 and 20 October 2016. The event was hosted by Perpetual at their Brisbane office, and over 80 students attended from Partner Schools in Brisbane, Ipswich, Toowoomba, Cairns and Townsville.
The Year 11 workshop focused on developing students interpersonal skills, resilience and motivation, with sessions on culture and identity, emotional intelligence and strengths and values. The students enjoyed hearing from guest speakers including AIEF Ambassador Tristan Landers, Indigenous educator Eddie Watkin and Indigenous academic Graham Akhurst. The students then enjoyed an evening of ten pin bowling, laser tag and karaoke.
Year 12 students attended sessions on financial literacy, facilitated by AIEF Corporate Partner the Commonwealth Banks Start Smart Foundation; interview techniques, facilitated by representatives from AIEF Corporate Partner Allens; and public speaking, facilitated by AIEF Ambassador Stephanie Brantz. Jennifer King from St Monicas College delivered a series of interactive activities focusing on cultural pride and strength a particularly moving and inspiring module, and AIEF Ambassador Jennifer Byrne facilitated a panel where Alumni shared their experiences transitioning from school and into further study or the workplace a valuable opportunity for students to learn from their older peers.
