In March 2013, AIEF invited representatives from Perth boarding schools to participate in the Port Hedland Community Development Project.
The Port Hedland Community Development Project was a first for AIEF, and gave five AIEF team members and ten Perth boarding school representatives the opportunity to visit Port Hedland and engage with the local community.
The day kicked off with a bus tour of the local Hedland sites, followed by lunch and a facilitated discussion around the challenges, strategies, relationship development and resources for building and sustaining positive family, school and community relationships in the Pilbara Region. The afternoon was spent at the Wangka Maya Pilbara Aboriginal Language Centre where local families were invited to afternoon tea and to hear about scholarships and other opportunities available to secondary students interested in attending boarding school in Perth.
